Brigantia has been sold

Brigantia has been sold!

After giving us three years of fun and joy and looking after her novice crew, Brigantia went to pastures new in the Autumn of 2013. This blog remains as an archive of our activities on board.

Our new yacht, "Erbas" has her own Ships Log

The Crew

Bru a.k.a. 'The Skipper'

He does do some work sometimes!
A dinghy sailor in his youth followed by more than two decades of kicking around the canals on everything from 21' GRP cruisers to a pair of 70' narrowboats.

A qualified electical and electronics engineer, self taught musician, sound engineer and all roung big head and self-publicist!

Co-owner of Brigantia

Posts on the blog and YBW forums etc. as 'Brigantia'

Rik a.k.a. 'The Mate'

Also a dinghy sailor in younger days and a canal boater. Sold his narrowboat in 2010 with the aim of getting his RYA Day Skipper and chartering in sunnier climes.

An even more qualified electronics engineer and sound engineer, Brigantia is a stepping stone towards Rik's longer term plans

Co-owner (for the time being) of Brigantia

Jane a.k.a. 'The Purser'

She swears she was enjoying it!

With no previous sailing experience, this is all new to Jane. She's liking it so far but she's keen to avoid becoming the chief cook and bottle washer!

Jane's biggest challenge is steering - left and right is bad enough but what the hell are port and starboard?!

Co-owner of Brigantia

Mark a.k.a. 'The Midshipman'

I'll hold this bit up Dad
Youngest of Bru and Jane's three children, shows real promise as a future skipper - he's a natural helmsman and keen to learn more.

Currently studying Electrical & Electronic Engineering at college and thus following in his fathers footsteps career wise.

Has plans to save up and buy a cruising dinghy such as a Wayfarer

Glen a.k.a. 'The Bosun'

He's not as gruff as he looks
Bru's brother. Not really a sailing man, he's more interested in the technical and theoretical side than the actual pulling on bits of string.

A qualified mathematician and computer wizard

He has a large shed stuffed full of all sorts of useful bits and pieces acquired over many years of boat ownership and he's the 'go to guy' in our circle for oil lamps, bits of string, Portapottis and other useful knick knacks!

Also ...

Heather

Marks' girlfriend, not too sure about the tippy over bouncy up and down side of sailing yet! Has only had one weekend aboard so far and that wasn't an ideal sailing weekend as there was too little wind the first day and too much the next!

Tony

Close friend of Bru and Rik, ex-RN and our lighting guy at gigs. Makes a crust driving HGV's and has so far never been in the right place at the right time to come down to the boat.

Carl

Bru and Janes' eldest. Plans to join the crew at some stage but a new job got in the way.

That's a lot of crew for a small boat?

True but we're not all aboard at the same time! Bru and Jane can only use the boat on certain weekends and by booking holidays due to work commitments so Brigantia is available for use by other crew members when they can't use her. Rik and Mark, as soon as they're competent and confident, will skipper her with their own crew in the future, perhaps not this year but certainly from next year onwards.

There are also quite a few weekends when Bru can get down to the boat but Jane can't and Bru will be looking for a crew to go sailing with.

Too many chiefs and not enough indians ...

The 'ranks' are just a bit of fun really although there is an element of truth to them.

Bru is the Skipper because he's the most experienced sailor and boater (and because he's a lot better at dishing out orders than obeying them!).

As the next most experienced sailor and a skipper in the making Rik is definitely the Mate.

Jane is the Purser because she didn't want to be the Cook! It fits because she's taking charge of the stores and cabin arrangements (and has made it clear she won't be doing all the cooking!)

Mark has very little experience of boats but he's keen and learning everything he can and he'll be a skipper before too many moons have passed. Definitely a Midshipman

Glen is the Bosun because he is a born Bosun! The words 'I think I've got one of those in the shed' are music to the ears of the impoverished skipper trying to fit out a boat on a tight budget!

Other ranks - Heather and Tony haven't sailed on Brigantia yet and have yet to be allocated a 'rank'. Their turn will come though :)
